LnkMon - Had your Fill?

Mamelodi South Africa Easter 2006Have you had your fill of Christians doing the Christian Thing, but still think that there might be something to "that whole God thing"?

Halfway to Normal has a pretty darn good summary/view.

This American Life has a Good Audio Clip on this as well.  Heck, listen to the whole show, I bet that you'll get hooked.

Red&Gray - Just One Person

I too have watched the Susan Boyle video many times - perhaps even 12 times in the last 24 hours.

While doing some outdoor chores and (frankly) having some time to think, I was reflecting on a conversation regarding this video that went along the lines of, "If she does nothing else in her life - ever - she will be able to easily count her life as a success.  Period."2005.01.01_374

The quick, will-stick lesson of not judging a book by its cover has now been imbedded in people's minds.  At last count, the video has been watched over 30 million times.

Those same chores caused me to think a couple other things - namely perseverance and (for lack of a better word) teamwork.

One. I have no idea of Ms. Boyle's background and/or training, but I'm guessing that she didn't wake up and go on the show without having been singing for years.  Maybe, but I doubt it.  So, it means that through about 20 years of adult life, she has knowingly (or perhaps unknowingly) been working toward this goal.  Persevering to that goal.

Good for her.

Two.  When Britian's Got Talent was created, I imagine that it was created to (well) make money.  Fine for them.  But now, it is apparent that they (from the hosts to the Key Grips) have created not just the TV show -- but the infrastructure -- to allow one individual the ability to if not change the world, to at least slightly re-direct it.

Good for them.

JstATht - Easter Pirate

OK, it may look like I'm going all political here, but I'm not . . . this really isn't the place and frankly I am still not quite sure what politics solve [hey, what do you know, I just went political there].

Anyway, I read the the NYT this morning about the rescue of the captain of the ship Maersk Alabama (see NYT article here).

One quote got me (and not really in a good way) . . .

“This is truly a very happy Easter for the Phillips family,” said Alison McColl, a Maersk representative assigned to speak for the family. “They are all just so happy and relieved,” she said. “I think you can all imagine their joy and what a happy moment it was for them.”

I don't know why the people referred to as pirates did what they did . . . and I'm not sure that any of us that weren't there are truly getting the whole story.  But it would appear that there were at least three people taking steps to do something that they thought was important -- even at the cost of impacting others.

I am not writing that I agree with it, but am laying groundwork for a point.

And the point is:  Celebrating the gain of one family in the same breath that another three families have lost much all the while invoking or inferring a Divine Interaction seems at least wrong and perhaps at most hypocritical.

JstATht - Twitter, Facebook, the Internet, the Telephone, and the Telegraph

In the recent past, I've begun looking at Twitter and Facebook.  For a while, I've used (and am frequently quite amazed) at the internet.

I just read an article about the transition from the Pony Express to the Telegraph to the Telephone, Internet, FB, and Twitter.

Alexander Graham Bell (years after the telephone was more-widespread) refused to have one in his office.  Oh, and Western Union refused to buy Bell's patent at $100,000 as it was just a toy.

I wonder what we'll look back at and just roll our eyes at.

e. PixTip - Inside No Flash, Outside Flash

When you're inside, try not to use a flash.  Go with a slower shutter speed and enjoy some of the blurriness.  The flash will frequently "fall off" (e.g., not illuminate equally) and cause harsh shadows.

When you're outside, turn the flash on. Counterintuitive again, but the highlights in the eyes and the fill light (especially on a sunny day) are perfect.

JstATht - Things Worthwhile Require Work

Read a couple of blogs today made me remember that the things in life that are truly going to be appreciated -- the ones that give you chills and make you feel like you're thriving -- are probably not going to be found on your street, in a college class, or at work.

Those things need a plan to get.

You can't find fresh seafood in South Dakota.

d. PixTip - Photographing Up = Power

When the Photographer is looking up and the subject is looking down, Power and/or Confidence is provided to the Subject.

c. PixTip - Crop, Cut out the (well) Crap

Get a program like iPhoto if you have a mac (it comes with the computer) or Thumbs+ (if you have a PC) that will let you crop the distracting stuff out of your pictures.

b. PixTip - On Level

Especially with Kids, it is easy to photograph (and look down) on them. . . and this comes with the baggage of (well) looking down on them.

If you can squat to get on their level, it will better show them as an individual, an equal (albeit younger) human.

a. PixTip - Take lots of Pictures

If you taking pictures of something important or if your just taking pictures of something (someone) you love.

Take Lots.

Digital is cheap and it'll allow you to choose the best.

Just saw a post over at The Economy Isn't Happening (actually it was by Mr. Truant, but over here at IttyBiz), have been thinking about a flurry of emails that I've traded with a local architect, and have been pondering something written by Paulo Coelho and quoted by Kate at Dancing with the Universe.

And this is only a partial solution, but a redirecting, fun step initiated by someone half my age.

So, as a challenge to myself, I'm going to attempt to write twenty-six tips on taking pictures of things that you like - taking good pictures.  Ones that not only remind you - the taker - of the time, but make a stranger think, "Man, I wish that I was there that day.  It looks like so much fun."

Oh, just to take a leap, perhaps it could be "How to capture Love in the Pixels."

PixTht Mon - So Much Better Than TV

Every now and then one of the kids gets a book . . . and then just devour it.

Such is the case with this book.

Boys reading in bed

This is so much better than TV.

OH, and if your 4yo and you're in your own bed and READING Theodor Geisel's The Foot Book . . . "Yes, you can stay up and read it out loud again!"

Thought Request

As I was getting ready for work this morning I was empathetically thinking of my 6yo son's classmate/friend (Max) who is getting a bone marrow transplant from his younger sister today.Catchin'SweetAir

Here is the request:  For a couple of moment's send a few positive vibes/thoughts to Max, Ellee and their family.  Do it now while its on the front of your brain.  .  .

Thanks, you've made this planet a little better.

Here is Max's (and his families) Journey.
