Another Trip Around the Sun

Had breakfast in bed this AM complete with Bagel, Juice, Cereal, and 44 Toast.

During this last trip around the sun, some things that I've thought, learned, or continue to think and learn . . .

Life:  Spend Life with a Kid's heart and with an Adult's wisdom.  Odds are good that during a year, one'll be let down - its a good time to learn.  Must find Peace with one's self, others won't be able to provide it for any duration (see previous item).

Work: Profit should be measured in many manners, not just monetarily.  It is much better if one can agree with work's purpose - aligned and understood goals are self-worthy.

Friends:  Like all life, good faith efforts are needed and deserved.  Internet friends are good catalysis for real friendships.  InRealLife friends are orders of magnitude better (sorry Twitter friends).

Money: A written budget blows away any in-my-mind budget.  Putting wanted-items off until they can be acquired without credit is a sign of financial maturity.

Sun: Metaphorically, a walk In the Sun permits focus, peace, and possibilities.

Godspeed on this next year's journey.

Having comment problems.  If you've left a comment in the past few months, I haven't smited you out of anger, I've lost you out of electron mis-navigation.

But I've read, responded to, and quite enjoyed the comments and appreciated your efforts - so thanks.

Ten Five Rules

I've been thinking about the Ten Commandments and the other basic rules of religion.  I'm pretty sure that all religions have "The Golden Rule" as one of their basic premises._MG_4640

Here are five the I've created:

1. The Golden Rule

2. Good Faith Effort - you don't have to get it right, you do have to try pretty hard

3. Practice Empathy - walk a little in other's shoes.

4. 16th Minute - if you don't agree with something, watch for 15 minutes before disagreeing or going into a tirade.

5. Be Accountable - For everything that you do, be able to say, "Yes, I did that"

Music & People

I think that I'm pretty darn lucky - I like music.  Nope, I mean that I really, really like music.

If there is a song playing and it has a good beat, and I'm wearing shorts, one can tell how much I like it by how red my thigh is.  If you are my neighbor, I'm pretty sure that you can get some good chuckles by watching my head gyrate to the beat of some good stuff while I'm cutting the lawn.

There is a problem though. IMG_0019

All music makes me think of people - of friends, of college, of high school - heck even of elementary school (Bay City Rollers' "Saturday Night" anyone.  I can still picture being on Bus No. 5 on 146th Street just west of River Road when my brother told me the lyrics - well, his version of the lyrics.)  So, that song is tied to him.

A piano solo 1:49 into the Lascivious Biddies "Wichita" reminds me of my dad - don't know why -- he played the violin - but it does.

It is not that I mind thinking of people - I love it.  Lovett, Mellencamp, Buffett, U2, and many others are all tied to people and memories - great memories.  But there are times when I listen to music that I want it to be just mine.  Mine to coast along and relax with.

On the way toward work with No. 4 in the car, I (we) were listening to some 1950's jazz.  As I was listening to it I realized that "Oh, this is some music that is kind of new to me and isn't connected to anyone.  Hey, that it pretty cool."

Then No. 4 brought me back to the present with a question that I hadn't heard.  When I asked her to repeat the question she said, "Would you play the beginning of that song again - I like that one thing."

And with that, all jazz is now tied to her.
